We Laugh in the Face of Love
My name is Amanda. I've been alive for twenty-two years all of which I've spent living in North Texas. I'm an art student looking for a teaching job. If my soul had asthma then music would be its inhaler. I'm a harry potter nerd... like to the point where I have it tattooed on my body… no literally I do. I work in my university’s library so I read allot of books. I love cold weather and watching movies. Like Delacroix said "my keenest wish is to remember that I am writing only for myself" therefore my blog is for my own mental health I don't expect anyone to understand it. I try to fill it with things that make me happy, ideas I have, projects I work on, and things that I find interesting. Enjoy.

food for thought: Relationships

I wrote this for a friend that asked for my advice.

and you may say “what the hell qualifies YOU to give relationship advice?” well my answer to you is: I don’t know why you should take my advice. I don’t even know if I’d be able to take my own advice if I was in a sticky situation, and No I’m not in a relationship and the only real one I’ve ever been in blew up in my face, but you know that phrase “those that don’t do, teach” maybe that’s me now. So as long  someone asks me for my help I’ll be here, and hopefully it will make me a better person.

So without further ado these are my thoughts of the day.

“Love is just a word until someone comes along and gives it meaning.”

I’ve been thinking slash writing allot lately. I swear one day I’ll have a book, but until then here’s some more food for thought I started writing this Saturday on a subject I don’t even pretend to fully understand… Love.

Note:This is a work in progress AND I might add more too it.

P.S. you can send question to my formspring

Classical v. Romantic

I felt this was blog worthy If you have time to read and think please do…

Classical

The Brain: rational, reasonable, calculating, measure in truths, formulas and calculations, teaching/learning/understanding, objectivity, didactic, tradition, ideal, standard of excellence, clarity, timeless, order/structure, study the past, nature

Romantic

The Bleeding Heart: irrational, feeling, honest emotion, mood, intuition, unrequited love, nostalgic for the past, dark morbid/macabre, search for the sublime for better understanding, conflicted soul, excessive, exotic, erotic, violence in nature, nationalism, madness, solitary genius (no one understands), immense respect for nature

Kay so I’m not going to lie to you I stole some of these from a greeting card (don’t judge me)

but I tweaked them and added some things… I honestly feel like these are things all friendships/relationships need…

It’s about laughing at the same things or just at each other

It’s about really being understood and understanding

It’s about never running out of things to talk about, but at the same time being comfortable with sharing silences

It’s about being accepted unconditionally

It’s about being there for each other when you need it

It’s about picking up right where you left off no matter how long you’ve been away from one another

It’s about doing/saying/sharing things that would normally be awkward with anyone else

It’s about doing things just because you want to not because your obligated

It’s about putting up with each other’s shit

It’s about loving the imperfections

It’s about having realistic expectations

It’s about forgiveness

and there is a ton of other stuff that I’m not thinking of I’m sure, but these are just the ones I thought up while reading my letter from kate. These seem kind of like pretty fundamental, no brainer things I guess, but really thinking about them makes me appreciate the relationships I have with my friends. I can think of 10 people off the top of my head that I feel most of these things apply and I’m so grateful to have them all in my life.

I fell in love with her courage, her sincerity, and her flaming self respect, and it is these things I’d believe in even if the whole world indulged in wild suspicions she wasn’t all she should be. I love her, and that’s the beginning of everything.
F. Scott Fitzgerald
I had not intended to love him; the reader knows I had wrought hard to extirpate from my soul the germs of love there detected; and now, at the first renewed view of him, they spontaneously revived, great and strong! He made me love him without looking at me.
Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte

cool story bro… no seriously though

I would have to consider myself a connoisseur of music. I have been listening and appreciating music my whole life. I’ve got at least seven years of choir under my belt along with a year or two singing with my church’s old youth band and some knowledge on how to play the clarinet. I have seen many a band play live both good and bad, but tonight felt completely different. I don’t know whether I can wholeheartedly say it was the best show I’ve ever been to in my life, but it would definitely rank high on my list of all time favorites.  Seryn is a local band out of Denton; funnily enough my friend Jasmine from California pointed them out to me earlier this year knowing that I walk the same streets as them. (I should thank her greatly because they have truly become one of my favorite bands.) I had only heard one song when I decided to buy their debut album This Is Where We Are. I’ve listened to it on and off for the last ten months and this afternoon Meagan sent me a text that they were playing a home show tonight which we almost immediately decided to attend. I had heard Seryn was really good live, but “really good” does not do them justice. They have such a wonderful presence. The harmony and dissonances they create are phenomenal it gave me chills. Some bands make music for the fame. You can tell when they get up on stage and put on a show and say silly things trying to gain the audiences acceptance. One of the opening bands was obnoxious like that, but Seryn plays with such conviction. It wasn’t even like they wanted to play their music, it was like they had to, needed to. They played like all of our lives depended on it. No one took center stage they stood in a half circle not one member more important than the other. They were humble and grateful to be playing at home with their friends. There were no gimmicks or jokes, only the music. It was really beautiful and amazing. It made me proud to live in the same city. The only downside to this is that now listening to the CD is a little disappointing… some music really must be heard live.

Favorite moment of the set= Chelsea on the violin, Aaron on the xylophone, Nathan on his Guitar, and Chris on his banjo ALL PLAYING WITH BOWS and Trenton playing ukulele with his mouth? It sounded crazy cool.  This video kind of shows it, but it’s not as impressive as what went down tonight.

There definitely worth checking out… Look for them playing live in a city near you
